Richard Stander was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan in 1922. He was a 1940 graduate of East Grand Rapids High School. He attended (then) Michigan State College from 1940-1942 and served in the military from 1942-1946. After the war he completed his BS degree at the University of Colorado in 1947 and went on to medical school at the University of Michigan, graduating cum laude in 1951.

Dick was an intern/resident at the University of Michigan from 1951-1956, and was an Instructor on the faculty from 1956-1957. He spent one year in practice in California and returned to professorial positions at the University of Indiana Medical School from 1958- 1967, working with Dr. Carl Huber.

In 1967 he moved to the University of Cincinnati as Professor and Chairman of Obstetrics and Gynecology. In 1975 he joined the restructured American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologist in Chicago, serving as Director of Education from 1975-1979. In the latter year he became Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque.

Dick suffered a debilitating stroke in 1984 and lived at home from that time onward until his peaceful death on January 21. During these twenty years his wife Henrietta ("Hud") provided almost constant care. He was a fine scientist, a published educator, and a good friend.
