Josef Zander was born June 19, 1918 and died December 1, 2007 at the age of 89.  Professor Josef Zander was educated at the universities of Marburg, Heidelberg and Tübingen.  He trained with Professor Dr. E. Letterer at the Institute of Pathology, University Tübingen; with Professor Dr. A. Butenandt at the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Institute of Biochemistry, Tübingen; and with Professor Dr. C. Kaufman of the University Clinic of Obstetrics and Gynecology.  Dr. Zander was a research associate at the University of Utah under the direction of Professor Dr. L.T. Samuel where he conducted basic research on progesterone.  He was appointed Chair of Ob/Gyn at the University of Heidelberg in 1964 and from 1970 to his retirement in 1986, served as the Director of the 1st Department of Obstetrics and Gyn ecology at the University of Munich.  His leadership positions included President of both the German Society of Endocrinology and the German Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology.  He was a Joseph Price Orator.  He was an honorary fellow of ACOG, Society of Pelvic Surgeons (VP in 1976), and the Felix Rutledge Society.  He was the Chief Editor of the German journal Geburtshilfe und Frauenheilkunde and served on numerous editorial boards.

His work set several milestones in endocrinology, gynecologic oncology and quality control for example the German perinatal control.  He was an inspiring teacher and an unforgettable friend to his colleagues.  He authored many handbooks in operative gynecology and gynecologic oncology and hundreds of papers and contributions.

We have lost an excellent scientific teacher, an engaged physician, and a friend.  We will miss his intelligence, wisdom and sensible recommendations.  He and his work will be unforgettable.  With his family we mourn his loss.
